This week marks the start of the 2014 NAIDOC week celebrations. NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia, and provides an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians bring to both country and society.

The theme for 2014 is Serving country: centenary and beyond, which honours all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence of Australia. The theme aims to highlight and recognise the role they have played in shaping a part of Australia’s identity, and reflect on the sacrifices they made.

NAIDOC week encourages local community celebrations, with a number of events being held across Australia. To check out what’s happening near you, and for some tips on how to celebrate NAIDOC week, please refer to the links below.

The national NAIDOC week awards ceremony and ball is being held this year in the Gold Coast, Queensland. The awards are an opportunity to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait artists, scholars, Elders and community members.
