Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescent sexual health guideline
Brisbane: Queensland Health

These guidelines provide health professionals with information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural and historical influences that will assist them in the delivery of culturally competent sexual healthcare to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents. This resource is appropriate for medical officers, nurses, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers involved in the delivery and management of primary and sexual health services.

The information contained in this resource is intended as a general guide only, and workers must recognise that differences exist among young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in terms of culture, beliefs, perspectives, and behaviours.

The resource is divided into three sections:

  • culturally capable adolescent sexual and reproductive healthcare
  • cultural background to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescent sexual healthcare
  • appendices focusing on social media, psychosocial assessment, and online resources.

The development of these guidelines was a collaborative effort, with input provided by an Indigenous sexual health clinical nurse consultant and a range of stakeholders from various settings in Queensland, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents and providers of sexual healthcare to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adolescents.
