Better diabetes care in country south SA
Adelaide: Country South SA Medicare Local

Diabetes is a complex condition that has a profound impact on the quality of life of people living with the condition as well as the health system.

In 2014 Country Health South Australia (SA) Medicare Local (CHSAML) identified the need and opportunity to review current diabetes-related practices, consult with consumers and services providers, and make recommendations about what needs to be done to help improve outcomes, addressing the particular needs of high risk groups including Aboriginal people and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

This report provides information on the case for change including summary information on:

  • diabetes prevalence and epidemiology
  • current challenges in diabetes care including service and workforce gaps
  • the lack of use of innovative technology and the need for better data.

In June 2015 CSSAML ceased operations and handed over to the new Country Health SA Primary Health Network.

The report provides recommendations to assist Country SA Primary Health Network to take action on this important health issue in the southern part of SA.
