Hearing the voices of Aboriginal people in child welfare
Sydney: NSW Child, Family and Community Peak Aboriginal Corporation
In 2019 the New South Wales (NSW) Child, Family and Community Peak Aboriginal Corporation (AbSec) consulted with Aboriginal families and communities affected by the Department of Communities and Justice in NSW.
The aim was to understand how they viewed the experience and what it meant to them in relation to safety, welfare and wellbeing for Aboriginal children, families and communities.
This report aims to elevate the experiences of those people who shared their experiences and perspectives and provide a basis to drive change. The sample case studies provided in the report aim to communicate to the wider public the experience of Aboriginal children, families and communities within the system. They also inform this inaugural report, presenting key themes and common issues raised through AbSec’s engagement with Aboriginal children, families and communities.
