Input is now being sought into the development of the new National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health plan (the Plan), following the launch of a discussion paper, online submissions process and national consultation dates this week.

The Close the gap campaign has welcomed the release of the discussion paper by the Department of Health and Ageing.

‘(This) marks the beginning of consultations towards a national plan for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality,’ Campaign Co-chair and Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda said.

‘The most critical ingredient in this process from this point on and at every stage in developing this plan is that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must be front and centre.’

Campaign Co-chair Jody Broun also welcomed the release of the discussion paper and again emphasised the importance of partnership.

‘The plan must develop structures and processes at the national, regional and local levels to ensure genuine partnership,’ Ms Broun said.

The commitment to developing a national plan for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality was announced in November last year.

The new discussion paper provides context and guidance for those intending to submit their ideas towards the development of a Plan. The discussion paper addresses these topics:

What is health in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context?
Why do we need a new Health Plan?
What is the current state of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health?
What are the key considerations and opportunities to improve health and wellbeing?
What should the Health Plan look like?
