The Prime Minister of Australia has announced that the Commonwealth Government will establish a Royal Commission into the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in the Northern Territory (NT).

The Royal Commission is to be undertaken as a joint initiative of the Commonwealth Government and the NT Government.

The Prime Minister, The Hon Malcolm Turnbull, stated that ‘Every child in our justice system must be treated with humanity and respect at all times,’ and that ‘previous inquiries conducted within the Northern Territory into the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre failed to identify the nature and extent of the behaviour highlighted by Four Corners’.
