Perth: Rural Health West

This cultural awareness resource is intended to be an introduction for health professionals who find themselves working in rural and remote locations, meeting, working and caring for Indigenous Australians. This resource is divided into a number of sections with discrete headings, including;

  • the history of Indigenous Australians;
  • impact of colonisation;
  • the importance of family;
  • kinship systems;
  • spirituality and the Dreaming;
  • cultural protocols
  • communication; and
  • health.

For new health professionals working in rural and remote locations, there will be an adjustment period between the health professional and the community, to gain a level of trust and to establish a working partnership that leads to positive health outcomes for the community. This resource aims to help in establishing a positive working partnership. The resource is easy to read and wonderfully illustrated, and  makes useful suggestions on what to do, how to do it and what to avoid.

The resource has an extensive reference list with online links, book titles and films available on DVD to assist those to further their knowledge.
