The purpose of this discussion paper is to contribute to knowledge about urban Aboriginal driven community development through a case study of the Australian city of Newcastle in New South Wales. The paper highlights the distinctive role community-based Aboriginal organisations play in Aboriginal driven community development and the realisation of urban Aboriginal people’s rights to self-determination, as well as addressing disadvantage and improving social wellbeing.
