Towards better Indigenous health data
Canberra: Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

This report describes the first phase of a project undertaken by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) to implement and evaluate the National best practice guidelines for collecting Indigenous status in health data sets across Australia. This project was conducted between July 2011 and December 2012 and helped to:

  • implement the guidelines in selected areas
  • document implementation activities
  • collect baseline information
  • identify barriers to and facilitators for implementation.

The project examined the following health sectors:

  • hospitals
  • drug treatment services
  • mental health services
  • National Diabetes Register
  • cancer registries
  • general practice.
