Brisbane conference focuses on reducing Indigenous cancer rates

A conference was held in Brisbane 3 December 2010 to address the rates of cancer among Indigenous Australians. Cancer survivors, Indigenous representatives and oncologists gathered to discuss new approaches to reduce cancer rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Key themes from the conference included the need to look at this issue on a national level, the importance of addressing tobacco use, access to services, rural and remote, and urban issues. A spokesperson for the Cancer Council commented about the need for improvements to screening practices in the Indigenous population by making information and services culturally appropriate.
